In Our Candy Drawer: Smashmallow Snackable Marshmallows

The humble marshmallow, with its origins in ancient Egypt, spent thousands of years being the soft, attractive supporting player in the candy world. Sure, we all love Peeps but most of the marshmallows eaten by adults are mix-ins to make brownies and sweet potatoes even better. Oh, and don’t forget the all-American s’more. Neither confectioners nor polite society looked to the marshmallow as a premium sweet snack that could stand on its own as a satisfying adult treat. That is, until now. Recently, several marshmallow makers have begun to introduce gourmet versions of the familiar puff, and we’ve sampled some of the best!

Smashmallow just introduced a line of premium snackable marshmallows. The all-natural indulgence comes in seven delicious flavor smash-ups: Cinnamon Churro, Espresso Bean, Meyer Lemon Chia Seed, Mint Chocolate Chip, Root Beer Float, Strawberries & Cream, and Toasted Coconut Pineapple. We’ll get to how they taste, of course, but for now, can we just admire how very attractive these marshmallows really are? Not only does the fun square shape set these apart from the cylindrical marshmallows we grew up with, but the colors and textures promise a boost of sweet and a sprinkling of fun. They are spongy and soft and smell very much like the pictures on the packaging suggest they would smell.

Now, to the taste. Each flavor really is mouth-wateringly good.

If you are partial to mint and chocolate, you will love how the Mint Chocolate Chip Smashmallow somehow has the refreshing chill of peppermint. Combine that with the crunch of the chocolate chips and you have a lowish calorie and fat-free dessert as satisfying as mint chocolate chip ice cream. Want to have a juicy tropical treat? Then the Toasted Coconut Pineapple is for you. It has just the right amount of pineapple flavor and it’s rolled in toasted coconut.

Two all time favorite drinks are also represented in the Smashmallow family. First up, Espresso Bean. Made with espresso coffee, this is the lowest calorie option at 70 calories per serving. We thought it was kind of fun to mix up our serving with a couple of the Cinnamon Churro marshmallows. Maybe this shouldn’t be your regular breakfast, but who doesn’t love coffee and churros? The next smash-up is Root Beer Float. This one tastes just like creamy vanilla ice cream in a frothy root beer. It’s an old-fashioned combination that takes us back to carefree summer days.

What a delightful surprise! The excitement starts with the sunshiny package and continues with the just squeezed lemon scent that   . The marshmallows combine a lively sweet citrus with the texture of real chia seeds. It just tastes energizing. The Cinnamon Churro marshmallows brings together the best things about marshmallows and churros, creating a chewy but crisp puff rolled in that heavenly cinnamon sugar. The package for Cinnamon Churro looks like a boardwalk or amusement park, and its taste does remind us of our favorite carnival food (but, at only 80 calories we don’t have to walk it off).

Finally, we have the Strawberries & Cream Smashmallow. This one is a dream if you love the classic English tea snack that features the flavor of fresh strawberries at their best. This pared down interpretation of the classic tastes like strawberries, cream, and sugar whipped to perfection.

For a different take on s’mores, we decided to make some with the Strawberries & Cream Smashmallow. We used MilkBoy Swiss White Chocolate with Bourbon Vanilla and honey graham crackers. Oh, man! It’s exceptionally good and looks like this:

The packaging hits on all of the latest marketing trends — it’s resealable (great for sharing and preserving), it’s a stand-up pouch (easy to store), it’s darned attractive, and it emphasizes its simple, better-for-you ingredients. At $4 for 4.5 oz., it is a premium product but well worth the price. Especially since you will want to savor the flavor of each one, you won’t need too many for a sweet-tooth satisfying pick-me-up.
